Problem with further SEC or B10 expansion.

With the per school payouts they are looking at, who can they add that is worth that much or more. What school can actually increase the per school average for the conference in order to make their addition worthwhile? They are essentially pricing themselves out of the expansion business unless they do as some rumors suggest and the SEC goes after the top handful of power programs like Clemson and Ohio St. Any schools at a lower level will end up being a drain financially.

One suggestion has been a SEC and ACC merger. No way that happens. The result would lower the payouts for SEC schools. Maybe 2 to 3 ACC schools at most would be beneficial to the SEC, others would just be a financial drain. There are rumors of the B10 adding Kansas and maybe Iowa St. Would either of these schools be worth enough to actually even pay for themselves? Doubtful. Either the B10 starts valuing something besides the money a school brings in or they start chasing after elite programs only. A school is going to have to bring an additional 70-80 million to be of value to either the SEC or B10. Not many schools can do that.

So the SEC and B10 need to start chasing the top of the other P5 conferences, or they start diluting their payments to members. The ACC will have more options for expansion due to our much small payouts. If the top teams stay in their current conferences, we should not see a lot of other movement with the B10 or SEC. The PAC and ACC are far more likely to find schools that can be an asset, but apart from ND not enough of an asset to really gain on the SEC and B10.
