Your last paragraph is spot on.
I started martial arts (Okinawan Kempo) when I was 4 years old. Black Belt at 8. Second Degree Black Belt at 12. I was the Head Assistant Instructor at 14. Taught until I went to college. For a while, I bounced and bartended at a few different bars around Blacksburg. I was hired as a bouncer at a bar downtown by a girl who eventually became my girlfriend, now wife. She (and all the other bartenders) knew about my martial arts background. She said that every time a fight was about to break out, all of the bartenders watched intently hoping they would get to see that physical knowledge in use. To their dismay, 99% of the time it ended with me calmly escorting them to the door. I realize being 6'4" 250 lbs helps, but the true knowledge is knowing when to use what you know. And to only use it if absolutely necessary. ALWAYS de-escalate first, but have the confidence to know you can protect yourself if needed.
I am 32 now, and I moved back to my hometown at the beginning of this year. Started karate again a couple months ago under the same instructor. [Post edited by BigJake20 at 07/26/2021 3:49PM]
