You are right....


in your thinking on focusing on guaranteed money. Best thing a kid can do is get a knowledgeable adviser(s). Knew a kid whose adviser was Cal Ripken's agent and I thought he gave the kid a strong piece of advice. He said set your minimum expectation for bonus/guaranteed money predraft and stick to it. Remove emotion from the process. Kid set $500K as his floor and was drafted. Team offerred $475K as final offer and he walked. Three years later he was drafted again and the bonus was $1MM. Worked out for him and obviously took a risk on a worse outcome, however, thought advise was sound as it minimizes the noise interfering with the decision. Added benefit to him was a good college career and a CWS appearance to boot.
