Interesting to think long-term about this, however...
Teams in the big cities don't have the passionate fan bases that teams in the SEC or other small college towns may have. I still remember going to the 2004 game vs USC. Sitting beside a few of their fans, it seemed like they were amazed of how passionate our fan base was during that game.
I think Miami can definitely succeed as a big city player because if that team gets dominate again, they have a fan base that will pay to continue their winning ways. Maryland could pull from the DC market if you get the right people (Under Armor for one). Oregon is a question mark - they already have Nike money, so that doesn't change too much. However, they are not in a high populated area.
Texas should be helped by this, but I think they have already had the advantages of money and it hasn't translated on the field. Teams like Boston College or Georgia Tech have the big cities, but there are too many other teams to pull for that they get lost in the shuffle.
Virginia Tech will stay, I believe, at the status quo for now...for better or worse. Winning fixes a lot of things, just have to figure out how to become a constant 10-win team to draw eyes again.
