The SCOTUS decision is about educational expenses, and only those. Absolutely.

But some comments by Gorsuch in the main decision and most especially by Kavanaugh in the concurring decision make pretty plain where this is all headed when more expansive cases are brought to court. But that's a tale for a future day.

1) I doubt that anyone much prefers dark money. But it's easier to pretend it's handled.

2) Some folks are projecting their negative opinions of the politics of higher education onto where they think this is all going. That paying any players anything will mean being forced to pay backup volleyball walkons commensurate with starting football players. Thus DOOM to all of the football.

3) It might turn college football roster building into a battle of resources. Schools with more cash could pay more in salaries, and those that couldn't keep up would fall by the wayside. VT is not on a level with Ohio State, for example, so DOOM to all of the football.

Also, it's clear that plenty of top-tier HS talent would rather be lost in the shuffle on the big name rosters. Most of them, of course, believe that they're not the ones who will be lost.
