I've been using my own modem, and it paid for itself years before it was...

...stuck. Frankly it paid for itself in less than a year as compared to renting one from Cox, so it had paid for itself at least a half dozen years prior to getting fried. My wireless router was also 5-6 years old when it was fried, so I wasn't broken up when I had to replace it. I bought a modem from Best Buy that day, then ordered a new router from Amazon. In two days I was up and running faster than before.

If my router died today, would replace it with a mesh router. That seems to be the current "go to" technology.
