Compare apples to apples

For Virginia Tech to win the ACC this year, it first needs to have a favorable record against its six Coastal opponents - UNC, Pitt, Georgia Tech, UVa, Duke and Miami - its two Atlantic opponents - Syracuse and Boston College. That means six or seven wins against a schedule in which the toughest opposition is UNC at home. Then Tech probably has to win a one-off against Clemson in Charlotte. The fact that the ACC also includes FSU, NC State, Wake, and Louisville is irrelevant because Tech will never see those opponents once, much less twice. Clemson will see the same opponent twice only if Pitt or Georgia Tech win the Coastal, either of which is exceedingly unlikely.

For West Virginia to win the Big 12, it probably needs to win at least seven against a slate that includes Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Kansas. Then it probably has to beat Oklahoma in Dallas when the Sooners have already seen what WVU has to offer. Substitute any Big 12 member other than OU for WVU and you get the same analysis. As for OU, it will necessarily play a team that it has already played.
