There is no greater empathy than that for your child, no matter how old they are - you raise them and would die for them, right? Overcoming that deep seated impulse so you stop enabling them once they are addicted is the difficult first step. Then you must accept that you have no control over them and only they can choose to get clean. The serenity prayer becomes your mantra: “God, grant me the Serenity to Accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference." This is the beginning of the path to recovery for parents and siblings of addicts. The Famanon group we meet with are without exception some of the best people I have met in every aspect. I thank God for them, many are still going to meetings 10+ years to mentor other families.
