My elderly Dad, in Blacksburg, gave up driving this past June but is making noises about driving again.

I have a number of arguments against this, but am trying to think ahead if he insists. I’m confident he’d be receptive to any independent assessments to help judge if this is reasonably safe.

It looks like DMV requires a vision test for anyone over 80 to renew their license. Good but not enough.

Is there a way to request a driving test, too? It looks like any citizen can report a suspected impaired driver, after which the DMV may decide to do a driving test. But that feels like it’d be after he starts driving again, and it might not actually result in a driving test.

If we can’t ask for the driving test as part of the license renewal, it seems another option is to use DriverSafe Rehab in Vinton to conduct an independent assessment. Anyone use them or a similar service near Blacksburg?
