I guess it depends on what you're looking for

I've done all three several times. Wifey lived on St Croix for a few years back in the day. St John's is stunningly beautiful. Great snorkeling. Most of the island is designated a State Park. Several beautiful beaches. The hurricane that hit a couple years ago did serious damage to much of the island so do your research.

St. Thomas - crowded, more touristy gets the cruise ships. But more restaurants and more night life. Still has beautiful beaches, but not as many and not quite as pristine.

St. Croix off the beaten path not really on anybody's list for US or B VI. I like it for that reason. Not as much to do. Still has beautiful beaches, snorkeling, diving (did my first night dive there about 30 years ago). The west end Frederiksted has less tourists and more locals. That's where we stay. We spent Christmas there year before last.

If forced to rank I'd say St. John, St. Croix, then St. Thomas. But FreightDog has the right idea. Bareboat it, secure the services of a captain if needed, and sail around if you can.

Another idea - consider Anegada. When I first sailed there (30 years ago) nothing was there but a beach bar. There are some tent hotels and simple accomodations now. I loved it there. It was rustic, windswept, and a little eerie. We were only ones with anchorage that night.
