Went to St. John for New Years....loved it. As others mentioned,

much more relaxed island, and honestly, I think prettier than St. Thomas. Have not been to St. Croix.
Not many chain hotels on St. John...we rented a home through VRBO, was a great option for our family. Needed a covid test before you went, then we pretty much went to a different beach on the island every morning to mid afternoon, then hung by the pool at the house in the afternoon. Bought groceries, so only went out to eat once.
Felt very safe!
