Dad, USN Minesweeper in Pearl a few years afterwards (updated)


Navy ROTC at UNC, basically they said screw it, commissioned everyone as ensigns and sent them on their way, my dad was 19 and as he related, he was a navy officer but couldn't drink, believe he was in San Francisco or somewhere waiting to embark and went out with the guys but couldn't be served.

So yeah in HI 43 I think, minesweepers with wooden hulls so not to set off mines, but probably a perfunctory duty by that time thinking Pearl Harbor was pretty secure by then.

Another duty was simply to head over to Na willi willi on Kauai to pick up fruits and vegetables bring 'em back to Pearl for returning submariners. Submariners got the best whenever they returned, if they returned.

I head over for dinner on Tuesday nights.
