Need help with an MTV theory

When MTV started on August 1, 1981 and for the next couple of years, it showed almost exclusively hard rock videos, metal, headbangers ball, and so on. Then when EVH played on Beat It with Michael Jackson, that one collaboration sort of made it OK then for MTV to start showing videos from other types of music, R & B, and black artists in general. Yes, Jackson was on a huge trajectory anyway, but I seem to recall that one solo by EVH opened up the doors for other artists on MTV.

Am I mis-remembering?
