So here are my thoughts, having faced this decision with my own freshman

Preface by saying -- everyone's situation is different, and my comments may not apply to everyone.

1) Skip a year. And do what? Travel -- can't travel outside the US, and even within the US isn't exactly rewarding these days. Maybe hike? Work where? In fast food maybe? Not a whole lot of jobs out there that would look good as a resume builder. The one thing you WON'T do in my house, is sit in your room and play video games all year.

2) Community college -- save money. Our 3 kids took community college classes while in high school and found them easy; professors not strong; students not very bright in general. And community colleges are all online also (at least in my area). So only advantage is money (which is a big issue for some admittedly). But I would expect that if money were the primary issue, you would already be at community college to begin with.

So that led us back to the original decision -- go get the best education you can under the circumstances. Yes, the situation sucks. As I reminded my sons, their grandfather was pulled out of VT and into WWII and D-Day. Would you rather have to deal with that, or online classes for a year?
