I don't know if you remember when AIDS first became a big thing...

But there are a lot of people whose death was attributed to AIDS, when it was actually pneumonia or some other complication or disease that killed them after AIDS had destroyed their ability to fight it off. Now it's probably correct to say they died because of the AIDS infection, but you can't be positive as those diseases are deadly by themselves. The AIDS just made sure the infection was fatal, whereas without AIDS they would have had a chance.

I don't know if that makes sense, but there it is.
