If you are fine with schools cutting sports that don't generate revenue
for the school, then are you also fine with conferences receiving less money in their network deals because the conferences have less content to broadcast? Also, keep in mind that some schools do make some money off a few non-revenue sports (i.e. ice hockey and baseball). Plus, the broadcast of the non-revenue sports do give the schools exposure to potential student who may not live within the state or even the country. For example, a student from Canada or Europe might decide to attend a college/university in the US because he/she happened to watch said college/university play an ice hockey game on TV. One of the reasons I decided to attend VT instead of a small private school in VA is because athletics was important to me at the time and VT has a big time athletic program.
