nearby, there is Consulate General in Merida along with Consular Agencies in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. There's also a Consular Agency in Puerto Vallarta, another beach town in Mexico. Not a bad thing to be near, as you'd be able to renew your passport, notarize documents, etc. without having to drive to wherever the nearest Consular Post is. For example, I lived in Cuernavaca for 10 years. If I wanted to renew my passport or get something notarized, I had to drive to the Embassy in Mexico City, which was about 2 hours away.
