Of the beaches in Mexico, the beaches in that general area, (Cancun,

Playa del Carmen) are some of the nicest. I would offer just a little advice with regards to retiring to Mexico because I've seen the same situation play out multiple times. Moving to Mexico when you're in fairly decent health isn't a bad deal. You sell the house back in the U.S., pay cash for whatever you get here, living expenses can be low depending on how you roll. But living in Mexico at 65 in decent health is not the same as living in Mexico when you're pushing 80. Things start to break down healthwise. Medicare covers nothing outside of the U.S. Private hospitals, which is where people want to go if they want a U.S. style hospital are expensive and won't treat without payment or will sometimes even refuse to release patients until they pay. So, people start to think they'll just jet back to the U.S. if anything bad comes up. But what if medically they can't? They start thinking on Medical Evacuation flights. 25k and up, and the State Dept. won't pay for that, nor will they pay medical bills in Mexico. So depending on the person's medical condition, the State Dept. may get a call that an American is hospitalized. The Embassy, Consulate, Consular Agency etc. starts trying to find family, but depending on how old the person is, there may either not be any family any more or there may be no contact info available (if the person is unconscious). It just turns into a mess. It's one of the reasons I'm trying to get back Stateside eventually. I don't want to be that guy in 30 to 40 years. Making sure your medical expenses are covered is one of the hardest parts of being an expat in my opinion. Just my two cents, and I certainly don't want to be a dream killer. Mexico has given me a lot of life and opportunity the last 13 years. Folks just don't seem to think far enough down the road sometimes.
