Chip, for 8 years I switched between DirecTV and Dish.

We saved money as opposed to cable (Xfinity here in Blacksburg). We would switch every two years, save money, and when the special ended, we switch. It works, as long as you keep track of the timing. Good luck.
I found Dish and DirecTV comparable in quality and programming.
