Miami football is who the ACC wanted and Donna Shalla held the cards to get

them. She wanted the exposure in New York and Boston because they got many out of state students from there. Then a guy named Bill Goodwin said to President Casteen at UVA, Mark Warner the governor at the time and George Allen a US Senator for Virginia at the time. Don't vote for expansion without Virginia Tech. With Duke and UNC not voting for expansion because their big donors were against it (similar to ND right now), it was all that was needed to turn the tide.

PS Casteen and Steger were great friends and had been working to get Virginia Tech in the ACC for years and Warner and Allen knew it was good for the state. There was not any arm twisting in Virginia to get this done. Initially they all thought the only way to get Virginia Tech in was to wait until the second round, but this board started posting if UVA doesn't vote for expansion, they can't expand. Yes that got to the people with the power to do something about it.
