Breaking in new running shoes - ouch question?

The shoes felt fine running 4 miles Saturday. Hit the rec center this morning, and got a toe blister after ~1.5 miles running on the rec center's indoor track. I adjusted (loosened) the laces on that shoe but it didn't fix the problem while running or walking. Lifted for a bit, then decided to give the treadmill a try. For some strange reason, the shoe didn't bother me (i.e. no rubbing).

Anyone want to venture a guess why my shoes were OK on the treadmill? I'm at a loss.
