Kindergarten or earlier IMO

We just have two boys, and they are in middle school now, but they picked out their clothes and dressed themselves when they were in day care (the primary reason for this being that I was the one that drops them off in the morning, as my wife leaves for work first). As long as you (or your wife) are checking the "within reason" part on their way out the door in the morning, I'm with you to give them the freedom to pick their own stuff.

I think the more "responsibility" you can give kids at an earlier age is better for them in the long run. Especially responsibility for things like this that don't really matter and it gives them some feeling of control over their own lives.
