When should kids be allowed to make clothing choices?

Inspired by below ...

Currently, my wife likes to "lay out" our kids clothing (not counting my son, her step son as I have almost total say there). 12 yr old boy, 8 yr old girl. I hear the kids often say things like "the reason I am not dressed is Mom didn't lay out my cloths" or "Mom said I can't wear XYZ because it doesn't match", etc.

My view is that they can pick out what they want ... if it doesn't match fine, life will teach them. Point out the mistake, but if they want to stick with un-matching stuff or sweat pants and a collared shirt with a tie, fine with me. They will begin to notice others and/or kids will tease them out of it. My wife would want to keep "laying out clothes" until college if I let her.

What age do you think kids can total dress themselves (within reason ... i.e. can't leave home in your under wear, etc)? Matching (color and style) here ... not slutty or wearing hate stuff on the table.
