Anyone who thinks WVU fans lacked a passion for the Penn State rivalry obviously never attended any game in Morgantown back when the series was ongoing. At EVERY game I ever attended at WVU in the 1980s (and that would be a LOT of them), some of the top selling items for the non-sanctioned vendors were t-shirts and buttons for the Pitt and Penn State series. One said "Eat $hit Pitt," the other said "Pi$$ on PSU." I used to collect cups from games that I would go to. WVU's vending contractor had special cups made for the Pitt and Penn State games depicting a Mountaineer and a wounded panther or mountain lion, and I still have them. WVU never did that for Maryland, Tech, Syracuse or anyone else.

Sure, Penn State beat WVU like a drum most years. WVU has beaten Penn State twice in my lifetime (1984 and 1988), and I am lucky to have been in attendance for both games. It may be so, and probably is so, that Penn State fans didn't take WVU nearly as seriously as WVU fans took Penn State, but it was a passionate rivalry, especially from the WVU side. There are plenty of one-sided rivalries out there. Texas leads its series with A&M 76-37-5, and they aren't playing anymore, and Texas has always looked down its nose at the boys in College Station, yet no one would deny that Horns-Aggies is not a rivalry.

Jack Fleming was the voice of the Mountaineers (and the Steelers) for more than a generation. He knew what was and was not a rivalry. Listen to his scene-setter and ask yourself whether the Penn State series was something Mountaineer fans care about. I can't speak for kids that weren't born the last time WVU and Penn State played, but for most of us who have been around a while longer, we could live happily with a Big 12 schedule forever if the non-conference opponents were Pitt, Penn State and the Little Sisters of the Poor.

I am a Mountaineer by birth and Hokie by choice. I know both programs. I do not presume to speak for fans of Virginia or Clemson or anyone else, even if I am pretty familiar with some of those programs and people who enjoy them. I can't speak to the passion Clemson fans might have for beating South Carolina or Georgia and I can't speak to how UVa fans really feel about UNC and Duke. I can only speculate.

My suggestion is that if you're not a fan of a particular team or program, and if you haven't grown up and lived nearly your entire life smack dab in the middle of all of a particular team's fans, you probably ought not offer opinions regarding rivalries to someone who is or has.
