I can barely remember under 40, but it sounds good.

The problem with your assumptions on a rivalry is that they fail the most basic requirement. A rivalry is a mutual expression by both institutions. Of course there are those that say if Team A has beaten Team B every year since Moses, then it isn't much of a rivalry and that is debatable. But, it is a rivalry.

The issue is that Penn State never saw WVU as a rival; WVU was just someone else they played on a regular basis during the various associations by conference was spread over decades. In other words, it was a game to Penn State. As for WVU being "jacked up" about it. That is not a rivalry either. Marquee game, perhaps but not a rivalry.

You site Maryland being a bellwether, that is true, but it is not a rivalry. WVU did not put much into it and UMD probably did not know we even played. You could walk around College Park the week before or AFTER and talk about the game and no one would know what you were talking about.

The other schools you mentioned also fail in that regard. For WVU there is only Pitt. VT came into the picture in the 1980's and that more or less died after the hard feelings by WVU over the way VT left the Big East. VT should have gone but how they left was a huge slap in the face to those they left behind. It was a rough time for the rest of the Big East teams and the exit could have been handled with more grace. Marcus Vick certainly made it even rougher than it had to be with his juvenile antics at the WVU games.

Finally, I would never use the phrase WVU and VT has a friendly rivalry around either fan base. WVU hates VT and from what I have seen of the Hokies, the feeling is only slightly softer. Right now it is rather calm but WVU has a doofus for a coach that sinking the team faster than the Titanic and the Hokies are dealing with a ten year hiatus that has cooled off their feelings. Let them play a couple of years in a row when it matters to both teams and it will get nasty fast.

The only school that I would think WVU might want as a rivalry for the shear fun of what those games used to be was Rutgers, during the Schiano days
