I beg to differ

Your post pegs you as someone who is well under 40 years old.

WVU's chief rival is and has always been Pitt, first and foremost. Thereafter comes Penn State, though that rivalry has been dormant for a very long time now. Even though WVU and PSU haven't played since 1992, you can bet that WVU fans would be far more jacked up to see the Nittany Lions in Morgantown than any program not named Pitt.

Thereafter, an argument can be made for Maryland, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. Syracuse is the longest rivalry. Maryland has historically been the most competitive from year to year, though until the early 1980s it was not frequently played. Until PSU left the WVU schedule and VT sort of took PSU's place as a dominant team on the schedule in the mid-1990s, Tech was just sort of a friendly rivalry that mattered mostly to folks in southern West Virginia. Only the young crowd looks at Tech as a rivalry that is as big a deal as Pitt or Penn State. As someone who grew up in West Virginia and graduated from high school in 1985, I could not have gone to college at Pitt or Penn State, though both are fine schools. But it seemed acceptable to me to go to Tech, because that rivalry was not a big one. It took me several years in Blacksburg and a lot of time spent around the athletic department to truly become a Hokie fan.

The idea that WVU folks do not see Maryland as a rival is nonsense. For many years, a win or loss over Maryland during the first three or four weeks of the season was regarded as a bellweather for how the rest of the season would go. Beat the Terps, and WVU was bound for 8-10 wins and a nice bowl. Lose to the Terps, and the season promised to be a slog with only a 50/50 chance of a bowl. Maryland is a very big deal to folks in West Virginia's eastern panhandle.

The idea that there is no rivalry between WVU and Louisville is also nonsense. It's not on par with the traditional eastern rivals, but those two schools played some huge football games during the RichRod era and a few earlier; basketball was a hot rivalry during the Pitino vs. Beilein/Huggins Big East years.

As for WVU-UVa, there is no rivalry. But there are plenty of folks who would like nothing better than to play the Hoos and run them into the ground. The two have played a few competitive basketball games lately, and although they haven't played often in football, the Hoos laid a couple of stinging losses on WVU that Mountaineer fans haven't forgotten (1984 and the bowl in Charlotte around 2002 or 2003).
