College Athletics and the sham of the Student Athlete

So we had a fun thread yesterday about collegiate athletics and it's general appropriateness in regards to a university's academic mission.

In light of today's UNC absurdity I would like to revisit that. As far as UNC goes, the NCAA ruled that since they offered the same bullshit classes to every student on campus, no extra benefit was granted to the athletes that took those courses. As such, no NCAA violation occurred.

The implication is clear. As far as the NCAA is concerned there is zero requirement for anything approaching academic rigor in the collegiate athletic setting. Students are free to take courses, for credit, that have no requirements that they do anything more significant than registering. If a college is willing to completely abandon any semblance of an academic mission in pursuit of March Madness dollars, the NCAA is 100% fine with that.

I guess that's a terrific opportunity being granted to underprivileged kids who might not get in to college otherwise? But no. It really isn't.

Could someone explain to me, please, how this is a good thing? Try to use an argument that doesn't boil down to a version of "Because that's the way it's always been done" or "But I'm such a big fan!".

I love watching Hokie football. I still do. But this is a blight.
