The most compelling argument I've heard came from some NASA scientists

who basically said the reason for his skepticism was that this is supposedly a scientific problem (i.e. how man-made contaminants are altering the climate), yet all of the proposed solutions are political.

If people were really serious about solving the problem (as opposed to being serious about creating a hysteria that allows them to hoard power, money, and influence), then ask the scientists to solve it instead of the politicians.

If you think mankind can alter the climate on the planet, then by God, let's alter the climate on the planet! What do you want it to be?

It really wouldn't be that hard to put solar sails in orbit that could either reflect or concentrate the suns rays to raise or lower the temperature of the planet by a few degrees. Any influence Man has over the temperature of the planet from down on the surface is ridiculously small compared to the effect that the sun has. Even tiny changes to how much sunlight hits the planet would dwarf any greenhouse effect we create.

Then all we would have to fight over is who gets to control the thermostat.

Boom. A few billion dollars and the whole planet is saved (vs. trillions of dollars to fundamentally change how we create and use energy across the planet).

That is the most intelligent counterargument for anthropomorphic climate change and what we should do about it that I've seen.
