Third in the State in VA (maybe PA or OH) isn't going to attract D1 coaching attention, especially because VA has divided into 6 divisions, which means that 3d place isn't really third place. Just the facts, not suggesting that he can't develop into college material. If you look at the thread below about Super 32 and the other national level tournaments that Hillcrest mentioned, he needs to start testing himself at that level if he wants to get any attention.

For kids in almost every sport who fall below the nationally recognized superstar category, I also would suggest that they start attending camps associated with the schools they like. I can't tell you how many kids I've known in soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, etc., who got noticed by a college coach that way, especially if they start early as freshmen, and keep going back. Robie's 30-man camp, for example, ends with live matches. You can be sure the coaches are watching those.
