This is to distract people from the delay on their MARS mission


SpaceX is nowhere near ready for it, and recently pushed it back 2+ years.

Competitors will have a lunar mission very soon (including landing and return), so SpaceX has to have something resembling a lunar mission (no landing).

It's consistent with Musk's approach in other businesses. Look Squirrel!
