You could go to a 12 team playoff and the number of games would not change
much.
First, P5 conferences should get rid of divisions.
Then top 2 teams in each conference play in conference championship at highest ranked teams home field. That gives you 10 teams for the playoff.
Top 2 ranked teams not in conference championships play in a playoff same day as conference championships at highest teams home field.
Total teams in playoff is 12 teams but after the conference championship weekend, you are down to 6 teams.
Next round occurs 1 weekend before New Years. Top 2 ranked teams get byes while #3 plays #6 and #4 plays #5.
New Years day you have final 4 teams play.
Championship is played the following Monday.
This setup puts emphasis on winning or being at top of the conference but also allows 2 at large teams to make playoffs. Committee would only be responsible for selecting 2 at large teams and their criteria would be reduced because all at large teams would not have won a conference so it would come down to who they beat. Conference championship games would have even more importance. And only 1 game would be added if the #3, #4, #5 or #6 seeded team make the championship game. Otherwise, teams would not play any additional games as they are now.
