A very long way to go
though that is not to downplay the huge significance of the things that have happened in my lifetime.
I sometimes like to think about this in terms of degrees of separation. I'm 60. My grandparents were born in the late 1800's in southern Illinois in one of the little towns where the Lincoln-Douglas debates took place. Their grandparents and others they knew witnessed those debates and were around when America came to grips with slavery. Basically, I know people who knew those people. And we have a huge chunk of society that is in the same boatwe are influenced by people who were influenced by those people.
Point being, it seems like an eternity since civil rights legislation was passed, but from an individual influence standpoint, those core values from 150 years ago really aren't all that far removed. My children have grown up in a world with a completely different set of values than I did. But I have no doubt left a mark on them (hopefully positive). I do think until we are even further removed (probably my grandchildren), those values will still have a significant presence in our society. [Post edited by daveinop at 05/10/2016 2:37PM]
