A lot of gray in that VT number

At VT what is labeled subsidy is simply the student athletic fees.

Yet, VT Athletics pays several million back to the university in "administrative fees," to cover services of police, accounting, budgeting, etc. These are things the university has to have in place anyway. Sure they need a little more of them due to the existence of Athletics, but mostly it gives the university another revenue source to spread part of those costs. The university took all the profits from Coke sales in the stadium for years, not certain if that is still the case. Athletics provides hundreds of free tickets and the best suite in the house to the President at no cost for fund raising and entertaining of big donors. The public suites and other athletic facilities are used by university departments year round for graduation, meetings, etc. at no cost but a cleaning fee. That's just a sample. Not to mention there is a service delivered for those student fees, they get to go to games for free. So calling all the student fees a "subsidy" is a stretch IMO. But obviously some universities like ODU, JMU, and VCU are out of control with the fees.

They don't highlight any of these subsidies that go the other way, or even net them against that subsidy total.
