Wow, just froze my 1TB Western Digital Hard drive overnight and it worked.

It's been failing for a few days (that sound..... the "click of death").

Bought a new Ext Drive and I've been frantically copying over data and got about half of it before it totally died (tried connecting and disconnecting over and over to mulitple computers yesterday to no avail)....so I thought.

After quotes near anywhere from $500 - $1500 from data recovery companies (the data isn't THAT dire to me) stuck it in the freezer overnight....and after 3 or 4 disconnects and a different pattern of noise from the drive...it came up under My Computer....busy copying again.

Can't believe that actually worked.

Backup your backup :-)

PS, keeping an extra Linux window open into the failing hard drive directory structure seems to "keep it open" and "see" the drive and prevent it from disconnecting.
