Like you, seeing him the first time was more than a pleasant surprise. one of my favorites.

A couple anecdotes:

At a fairly small and intimate stage, some sorta drunk guy yells out "You're my hero!"

Jason replies - I wish I could quote exactly - "If you like guys who sit on the couch and watch cartoons on Saturday morning eating popcorn" then yeah, I' guess I'm your hero." (something like that)

I was just rolling but pretty sure he was making a serious point that he's screwed up many times , if only you knew. I was talking to another guy about him, said some guy came up to Jason and told him he was an alcoholic and didn't know where to go/what do and Jason - who was a notorious drinker - spent five minutes talking with him. So yeah, he was going to shake off the praise and has some serious wheels turning in his head... while still being a great musician.
