This has lots of merit - Will - maybe something a little different
There is a "report abuse" button right beside the DV button. The way the use of the DV is now explained, there's not a whole lot of difference between them. I realize there are exceptions when there has been an egregious post that needs to be immediately removed and I'd guess this is how Will/Chris want to use this. But there could be merit in having this used more often, because posters are obviously using the DV for multiple reasons - they don't like the idea/content of the post (even if explained nicely) , rude/insulting posts, just don't like the poster and game playing between posters.
Posters (myself included) often want to express their disagreement with the content that has been presented logically, but really don't feel like engaging in long drawn out discussion, that likely has been repeated many times (i.e.- paying or not paying college athletes) this is similar to like/dislike buttons on other boards.
More discussion is better, but there is value in having a type of "poll" that lets readers know the overall board attitude toward an issue, even if all don't post about it.
As far as rankings - surely, there is an algorithm that can take into account how often a person uses the DV, is DVed and if they have been reported for abuse. Using/getting a lot of DVs may indicate a NATT type poster that deserves a low ranking - but not retribution from the board unless it also comes with reports of abuse.
