All of that is true, but it's not as important as out of state students.
We get most of our out of state students from the north and very few from the south. Out of state students pay roughly double in state students and they help to keep tuition down. Out of state students from up north are often from expensive private schools and often have higher gpa's and standardized board test. These things matter in ranking your university. These things matter in getting both federal and corporate funding.
If the SEC had offered in 2003 or earlier we would have likely accepted because it was better in those areas than what we had at the time. However, they did not and the ACC did offer. Now the order is ACC (Channel's coming), B1G and SEC. For all of the reasons that I stated above.
