This reminds me of a time long, long ago and almost a different world.
Back in the late 70's, before internet, etc companies used to advertise in specialty magazines.
I had a photography magazine and in the back were a slew of ads for camera shops, mostly in NYC.
I was interested in a camera, so I called the toll free number of a camera shop, 47th Street Photo IIRC.
A woman answered the phone. I couldn't understand her and she could understand me. She had a bloody NYC accent and talked a mile a minute. And I'm a slow speaking southerner. And this was after I had spent 3.5 years in Newport, RI.
She passed the phone to someone who could translate.
Was very interesting.
