It's a bit of a sore subject to me
Technically, the team has to give any surplus items to procurement - they are not allowed to sell it themselves. These particular jerseys fell through the cracks somehow, so I was able to get them in the auction.
If you ever go to one of the monthly surplus auctions held by Surplus Property Department, you would shake your head. There are a LOT of very nice stuff in that auction. It appears to the untrained eye (mine) that if a department does not spend their budget, they lose it so they will buy new stuff and give the "old" stuff to surplus to sell. I have seen brand new football cleats, tennis shoes, warmup suits, etc., being sold for pennies on the dollar.
I linked the last auction listing below. It was two weeks ago. Check out the items starting at lot #136 - TShits, polos, shoes, jerseys, etc. I should be clear that I have never seen any NEW softball equipment in there, but I certainly can't say that about other teams. OK, rant over.
As a Virginia taxpayer, it makes me angry.
