OK Lounge cyclists. Bicycle recommendations for my son.

First and most importantly, I'm not certain that he'll commit to riding on a regular basis. We had bikes available to us on our recent vacation, and he enjoyed riding there and is asking for a new bike, but I'm NOT going to spend big money on one for him to then not have him ride it. He's 13, but is already 5' 8", so he's likely to top 6' plus, so I want a bike that can grow with him. And yes, quality is important, but obviously not willing to pay for the best at this point.

As for what type of riding? We have a lot of paved and packed gravel / hard dirt trails around here. I can't see him becoming a mountain biker, but I do foresee wanting something beyond a road bike. I have an old Gary Fisher hybrid still in good shape and I'll certainly ride with him some. Something along that lines with wider tires than a road bike, but without going full mountain bike.

Recommended brands? Even any specific models you'd suggest? Thanks.
