Looking at it from the athletes angle, back to the OP's question

the decision processes that lead athletes to choose pedo state or whoever they choose.

Realistic or not, a lot of athletes in football, basketball, baseball, see a pro future as a path. Their end game is that. Whereas wrestlers don't see that path, and I imagine it is part of the decision process.
