"Deserve" may be a bad word


Let me put it this way, I do think as a parent, you have an obligation to provide for your child, within the context of your means. Does that obligation mean they "deserve" it?

I think every kid deserves the basics of existence: food, clothing, shelter, safety/security, health care, and love. But beyond that, I think every kid deserves to be raised in such a way that they are prepared to be a fully functional adult some day. And a darned good case can be made that access to transportation is one piece of being a functional adult.

Maybe that means you teach them how to use public transit. Maybe you choose to live somewhere where walking or riding a bike everywhere are viable options. But if you chose to live in the suburbs where you can't go or do anything without driving, then learning to drive and having access to a vehicle is a necessary part of growing up.
