To add how both I and my parents approached this

When I turned 16, I got the old family car. My dad drove a company car, my mom had a relatively new car, and I got the Olds that was the family car when I was growing up. In retrospect, that was an awesome car. Unfortunately, small cars were cool in the late 80's and I hated that battleship at the time. But it's what they provided me and I didn't have the resources to get what I wanted. So I sucked it up.

When my daughter turned 16, I did roughly the same thing. I went and bought myself a new car, and she got my ten year old Mazda 3 with 200k miles on it. That kinda reads like it's a clunker, but I have all the maintenance records on it, the vast majority of the miles are interstate highway miles, I know how it was driven and cared for throughout it's life, it's got traction control, antilock brakes, and full curtain air bags so it's as safe as a small car can be, and it has been pretty reliable thus far. She's mostly happy driving it, and I'm mostly happy with that as her car. If she wants something different, she can save up and buy it herself.
