The British Merchant Marine had a higher causality rate than any of the

British military services. Great British Merchant Marine museum in London. My grandfather was sunk 3 times by German U-boats. One sinking was one of the boats that rescued him, as they head to port.

I actually have the same job as my grandfather - we both moved large vessels with other people’s shirt in it. I just get there faster, sleep in a better bed, and drink better beer. 😉

We have some of his logs from signing on to crews in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc from the 20s.
