It's unusual, yes, but I think the point was it doesn't

mean we didn't want him or there was NIL or it was $EC or nefarious

I think there's a tendency to overthink kids' decisions...like it can't be an obvious explanation such as they just love some other place and VT isn't the right place for them

Maybe he loved everything about Missouri and said "if this is available 5 hours from home, I don't need to bother looking any further."
