Sounds like an Air BnB could be an option for that.

Some of those can be very charming little places that might have the character you want. As long as you don’t need a front desk and concierge. But you have e right idea; pay more for being closer to the city center. Hopefully only a few blocks from a Tube Station. Will certainly make the trip much more memorable.
