Al and Bernie married sisters and divorced them.


Al and Bernie's first father-in-law was apparently a piece of work. He was a doctor but also a missionary to Africa in the 1930s. If you know the book The Poisonwood Bible or read a synopsis of it, the main character in that book was an almost exact copy of the father-in-law. He took his wife and young daughters to Africa and left them to fend for themselves while he was out proselytizing to natives. The mother really hated the situation and tried to commit suicide by hanging but one of the daughters cut her down just in time.

Bernie and Al argue all the time about which one of them the father-in-law hated the most.
