As far as HBO decision making went


they probably thought it was going to be overkill to split the book into different seasons, which was a bit of a mistake. Like you said, you lost a lot of lore and deeper things they could have put in. They ended up splitting book 3 across Season 3 and 4 and that's when the show REALLY took off.

I circle back again, to the only screen adaptation better than the books are the Lord of the Rings movies (not the Hobbit). You always seem to lose a lot of little things when you move to the screen.
