I remember driving home from work with a buddy in his Vega in the 80's

Suddenly smoke starting coming out of the steering column and the engine made a brief, horrific noise before only momentum allowed us to make it to the side of the road (it was a stick). That was the end of that engine. Cool little car - must have been one of those later models
