bats have gotten hotter and hotter making it dangerous for alot of players. I have seen alot of pitchers take a shot and they could hardly move to protect themselves. I don't think the skill level matters all the time as sometimes the ball is hit to hard for anyone to catch. Some corners wear them as they play close to the plate. a pitcher can be defenseless alot of the times but as a fielder I think the mask can hinder a play also. But I will say that opinion is changing as 3rd and 1st have become even hotter spots on the field.
